The former torpedo building of the Fort Wadsworth complex. These 19th century 'torpedoes' were om fact explosive buoys that could be triggered by an electrical wire. If any threat occurred, the army could quickly deploy them across the narrows. The cables were stored in a different building. The rails were for transporting the torpedoes to the wharf.

The Eagean Highway, a ship designed to transport cars. We had a bit of a discussion whether it was coming towards us (from direction NY) with its front or its backside.

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge connects Staten Island to Brooklyn.

At the time of its opening in 1964, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world. Nowadays, it's still the largest suspension bridge in the US. In 1969, an extra deck was added.

The bridge measures 2039 meters between the anchor points. The main span between the towers, which stand over 200 meters tall, is 1298 meter long. The bridge sees about 33 million car rides each year.

The deck is 70 meters over the water, so it poses no problem for even the largest ocean steamers entering the New York bay.
